Rich By 40: A Young Couple’s Guide to Building Net Worth
We typically only review books related to the theme of entrepreneurship, small business, and innovation on this website. Finance is usually discussed in terms of finding startup capital from angel investors, banks, and Venture Capitalists to fund a business. Personal finance is rarely brought up. However, many of the lessons in Rich by Forty: A Young Couples’ Guide to Building Net Worth, are relevant to anyone planning ahead for their future. This most certainly includes entrepreneurs and small businesspeople. If your personal finances are not in order it will be very difficult to start a business.
The author, Lesley Scorgie, does an excellent job of breaking down what might at first seem like
complex financial issues for every day readers. No matter what stage in your financial lifecycle you happen to currently be in or how financially literate (or illiterate) you are, this book will speak to you.
As the title may suggest, this is not a “get rich quick” book. The author believes in “building a solid financial foundation based on tried-and-true principles”. Scorgie goes on to say: “Having a solid understanding of money management is essential and plays a major role in ensuring you can achieve, and fund, your hopes and dreams”.
Some of the main topics discussed include:
- Relationships, money, and how to talk about them
- What net worth is and why it’s important
- Making financial commitments to a home, family, a dream
- Sharing, protecting, planning, and pre-nups
- Debt reduction
- Big-ticket purchases
- Investing
- How to financially prepare for life’s ups and downs
Rich by 40 is highly recommended as an easy-to-follow book for readers who want to up their personal finance IQ.
